The Terminal 2004 Film's Intrinsic Elements

THE TERMINAL

1.       PLOT

INTRODUCTION

Viktor Navorski, someone who came from krakozhia flight to New York to get the autograph of jazz saxophonist “Benny Golson” to complete the 57^th of his father’s collection who has dead before the collections were complete.

            RAISING ACTION

a.      Viktor Navorski had trouble with communication in spoken English. Because his vocab isn’t much, he just know a little English and he doesn’t understood English vocab so much.

b.     When he landed in JFK airport, US. In the same time as he landed, his country were in civil war.

c.      When he stay in the terminal at the first time, he has no friends . and the people around him suspect him as a bad and strange person.

d.     He also get problems with daily life, how could he survive at the airport such as how to get food, place for sleep and take a bath.

e.      Amelia give viktor one-day emergency visa in order he can meet benny golson.

CLIMAX

When Viktor was given option by Dixon whether he go to New York and meet Benny Golson but his friend Gupta must be deported because of his case in the past and also his others friends who proved break the rules because of helping Viktor will be fired or he go back to Krakozhia but he can’t get the autograph of Benny Golson that will fulfil his dead father’s dream and cannot complete the 57^th collections.

                FALLING ACTION

a.        He get confused to communicate with other people in the airport , so he realized that he must learn English more.

b.       When Viktor’s friends told him that the war in krakozhia has ended.

c.       Gupta as Victor’s friend in the terminal prevent Victor from leaving America by stopping a plane only with a mop on his hand. Knowing this Victor understand his sacrifice and then take the initiative to go to America to fulfill his duty, to find Benny Golson. On his way in the airport to the outside the people gathered to watch his leave for America. Even the security that is supposed to catch him is on his side by giving a coat to him to face the snow outside.

RESOLUTION

the reason why he came to America is solved by meeting Benny Golson as the main purpose of his journey. Victor at last got Benny Golson’s signature after listened the impressive saxophone performance by Benny himself. With the entire long journey mentioned above Victor’s struggle to get his mission done is paid well by the resolution of this movie.

2.       CONFLICT

VIKTOR (AS PROTAGONIST)

a.       Victor against himself

It happens when his mind is hesitating to leave the building when the gate is opened by Dixon. Even though he want to go outside he decide not to go out.

And also when viktor must choose go to new York but his friends will be deported or going back to krakozhia and Dixon would let his friends keep stay in the airport.

b.      Victor against the society

It happens when the people in the airport hardly accept Victor’s existence. Even Gupta the person who become Victor’s savior in the beginning suspected Victor as a bad guy. But by proving his true nature as a good person slowly the people there not only accept but respect him at last.

DIXON (AS ANTAGONIST)

a.       Dixon against viktor

It happens when Dixon was threatening Viktor by giving Viktor a choice about going to Krakozhia and he will let victor’s friends keep stay in JFK airport or going to New York but his friends will be deported.

b.      Dixon against the society

It happens when Dixon command all of his staff to close the main door so Viktor couldn’t get out from the airport but in the end all of his staff let him out, didn’t doing what Dixon want them to do.

3.       SYMBOL

a.       The can

It symbol of viktor’s father dream, because the can is the only reason why Viktor is going to New York. And it contain all of the autographs which belong to his father collection, but it still incomplete, it need one less autograph to complete his father collection and it must be signed by Benny Golson.

b.       Viktor

Victor is a symbol of a honest person in duty of fulfilling something. It shown on how he fulfill his promise to his father in a honest way, he is seduced by Dixon to leave the terminal when the gates are not guarded by the guards but he resist that and tend to wait rather to broke the rules.

c.       The Terminal

It is symbol of a gate. It is shown that the only way victor to solve the problem is to go out from the terminal and find Benny Golson. But the gate is closed because of Victor’s invalid passport and that makes the main problem of the story.

4.       ARCHETYPAL ELEMENTS

A.      SETTING

a.       SETTING OF PLACE

THE WASTE LAND is GATE 67 because in the gate 67 nothing is growing. It’s not a beautiful place. But gate 67 always belong to viktor’s journey but gate 67 isn’t his destination. Gate 67 is the part of the terminal. We think the terminal in the airport at the first time is the waste land, because Viktor feel strange at there.

THE CASTLE

GATE 67 it is a place for Viktor’s protection maybe gate 67 isn’t a good place to live but here he stay, here he live, here he sleep, he felt safe in gate 67,and he enjoyed there.

THE SUBURBIA

THE TERMINAL because it’s a modern place which we can find a unique or different things in it. Everything is in the same figure, lack of individualism.

PARADISE

RAMADA INN, 161 LEXINGTON AVENUE this is the perfect place , because in this place viktor can complete his fathers collection, and he felt very happy when he came in to this place.

b.       SETTING OF TIME

All day long

c.       SETTING OF CONDITION

crowded and noisy at the terminal, but it kindship for viktor because he and his friends share their life and help each other.

B.      CHARACTER

HERO

Ø  THE BEST FRIENDS

GUPTA RAFAN, JOEY MULRAY, ENRIQUE CRUZ they belong to Viktor’s best friends                 because they’re nice guy who is willing to do what it takes, they are also like to help viktor and they come along together.

Ø  THE EVERYMAN

VIKTOR NAVROZKY he is an ordinary and normal boy, not particularly attractive, not                 particularly strong, but he became a hero . And he also multitalented person, he never                 give up.

Ø  THE SIDEKICK/HENCHMAN

RAY THURMAN He works for someone who is more important (Dixon).

Ø  THE GUIDE

RAY THURMAN, WAYLIN they both gave direction to Victor.

VILLAIN

Ø  THE TYRANT

DIXON he has manipulated his environtment. And he usually controls everything in the airport.

WOMAN

Ø  THE TOMBOY

AMELIA WARREN She is active female character, she is quite strong. She can hold everything by herself. To prove it, she has to renewed her relationship with the man who actually a married government official during this process just to help viktor and get one-day emergency visa for viktor. And she has already worked as a flight attendant for  22 years.
